Automatic passenger counting

Automatic passenger counters (APC)

Automatic passenger counters are electronic counting devices used in public transportation systems to automatically count and log the number of passengers boarding and alighting from buses, trains, trams, and other modes of public transportation.

Monitor and record your passenger traffic

APCs are a crucial tool for modernizing and improving public transportation services. This technology improves the accuracy and reliability of tracking transit ridership which is beneficial for transit service planning as well as the accuracy of reporting.

These systems enable data-driven decision-making which leads to better service quality, increased ridership, and improved financial sustainability for transit agencies.

APCs are especially helpful in high-passenger volume applications when the flow of passengers becomes rampant. They are also crucial in allowing all-door boarding on buses for gathering accurate patronage data and comparing that data to fare revenues.

Improve ridership with accurate passenger counts

Accurate data is at the forefront of the benefits gained from using automatic passenger counting devices. Compared to outdated manual passenger counting methods, APCs can offer as much as 98% precision in collecting your ridership data.

Utilizing APCs transforms your ridership data into accurate data that you can then use as a foundation for making informed decisions. When organizations have confidence in the data they use, they can make better choices about strategies, investments, and resource allocation.

Accurate ridership data also helps inform decisions about where to invest in transit infrastructure. High ridership areas may warrant additional stations, expanded bus routes, or the development of new transit lines.

Enhance your planning and scheduling operations

Service planning and optimization becomes easier when you have ridership data that helps your agency understand how passengers use your service.

With APCs you are able to analyze ridership patterns and identify high demand routes and time slots. Optimize your schedules, allocate your resources more efficiently, and adjust services to meet your passenger needs.

Attain NTD certification and reap its benefits

One of, if not the main reason transit agencies often seek National Transit Database (NTD) certification, is to attain federal funding.

To be eligible for these funds, transit agencies must comply with various federal regulations and reporting requirements, including NTD reporting. It's crucial these agencies receive funding in order to support their operations and capital projects.

Not only does NTD certification ensure compliance with federal funding requirements, it also provides reliable data for analysis and decision-making, promotes transparency and accountability, and helps agencies monitor and improve their performance.

NTD certification is easier with Connexionz

If you're a transit agency and wanting NTD certification, look no further. We partner with Urban transportion Association (UTA) to deliver NTD certification for our customers.

Connexionz work with UTA because they are the only APC supplier that can confidently obtain NTD certification. APC counts will be made available to the UTA NTD reporting software and services.

When certification isn't required, we can supply APC sensors and deliver NTD reports through our Analytics.

Get 98+% accurate counts

We partner with Iris to provide advanced and high-quality APC systems to meet evolving transit needs. We use the Iris IRMA MATRIX laser sensor to maintain 98+% accuracy of real-time passenger load.

The sensor system uses Lidar technology and can reliably distinguish between passengers walking behind the other or walking side by side, baggage and objects such as adults, children, riders walking closely together, wheelchairs, bicycles, and strollers.

We know NTD reporting

National Transit Database (NTD) Forms MR20 & S10 are two forms that mobility agencies are required to complete.

1. Monthly Ridership Form (MR20)
Provides the NTD with monthly ridership data for each mode of public transportation service the agency operates. These data provide FTA with montly trends in passenger usage and service levels.

2. Service Non-Rail Form (S10)
Agencies report service supplied and consumed on the service form. The S-10 form is an overview of the data associated with service that is scheduled and operated by transit agencies.
